These frames are carved from Central American Mahogany, a true carving wood.
The couple I made these for traveled to Washington D.C. regularly and often purchased one-of-a-kind needle works. After she had spent a year of steady work on this imaginary forest scene, I was asked to produce frames for it in an Art Nouveau style.
Their daughter, who lives in Paris, had given her father a book of Art Nouveau furniture from the Musee DOrsay ( www.musee-orsai.fr ); this was the source of inspiration for the lines of these frames. I commandeered his book for several years after claiming I needed it for references for other projects; and in fact it was also the source of inspiration and ideas for the
carved headboard elsewhere in this gallery. (Eventually I felt guilty and returned the book.) Gratefully they are both close friends and actually they allowed me the use of the book for as long as I wanted.
These were fun frames to carve.
