Headboard

Carved Headboard in Anigré

This headboard is designed to sit in the middle of a very large room with a king-sized bed connected at the side opposite the drawers. It is fully carved, with no applied carvings. This piece is made from an African wood called Anigre, chosen by the customer for its color. It is a very difficult wood to carve because the fibers of the wood crush rather than cut cleanly.

The design was taken from a book of furniture from (and an actual complete room restoration on exhibit in) the Musee D’Orsay (www.musee-orsay.fr), adjacent to the Louvre in Paris. It is in the Art Nouveau style.

It took me over a year to design the piece and 16 months to build it. This piece is part of a complete set of furniture I built for the customers’ 18,000 sq. ft. home. It included a mortise-and-tenon kitchen table made of 2’ thick curly maple, and a dining table in the style of George Nakashima, made from a slab of walnut 3" thick by 13’ ft long, 52" wide on one end and 62" wide on the other, with 13 walnut chairs, upholstered in forest green leather on the seats and backs.
